Tony Serio "Hudson River Landscapes"
Bowery Gallery
This event has ended.
The Westside Highway runs along the Hudson River, separating a narrow strip of parkland called "the greenway" from the rest of Manhattan. A ramp takes you down to the park where the dark shadow of the elevated highway frames the light on the river and grass. Maybe it is this glowing vision that makes the place a favorite weekend destination for the local community to eat, drink and bask in the sun. Intrigued by the sight of people at their leisure so close to the highway, Tony Serio decided to explore the greenway landscape in a series of paintings
Bright blues, reds, and yellows of table coverings, umbrellas and picnic gear punctuate the continuous green as bicyclists and pedestrians pass by. Working on location and in the studio, Serio composed these fleeting impressions into panoramic views. This long horizontal format was key in capturing people socializing and playing sports against the hard geometry of the steel and concrete.
However, the calm of his images belies the frenetic energy it takes to capture this scene. Each stroke of the brush or palette knife weaves people, trees, river and the ever-present George Washington Bridge together into a balanced composition. Abstract areas of color reminiscent of Seurat simplify the subject and evoke the spirit of an urban summer idyll
Serio also explores the dramatic expanse of the river and palisades from his elevated window view. These Hudson River views reveal the depth of color and atmosphere at different times of day and season.
