This event has ended.

Nicelle Beauchene Gallery presents a two-person exhibition of woodblock prints by London based artist Jack Vickridge and wooden sculptural reliefs by Brooklyn based artist Lizzie Wright.

The two artists in this exhibition are united not only by their shared exploration of geometric abstraction but through their use of spare, elegant forms rendered through their physical approach to mark making and material investigation of wood. In some instances the geometry is removed or substituted, while in others it is suggested as the elusive site of memory and time. In either case, both artists present work that locates itself partially beyond its apparent graphical content to rigorous sites where the manipulation and contemplation of materials is the aesthetic conceit.

In Vickridge’s woodblock prints, the elemental act of mark and erasure is the generative process for which his plates are made. The plates are created by a series of folds, scores and dissections, actions that allude to the physical and sculptural act of mark making.
Each print exists in a form of aleatoric composition, where a tactile memory remains from the performative acts by which it was generated.

Considering the relationship between organic and abstract form, Lizzie Wright’s whitewashed sculptures utilize offcuts of wood where the marks of cutting and gritty sense of form, depth and materiality are central to the work. Presented on the wall and
utilizing a modest scale, these sculptures connote a kind of handmade “good enough” aesthetic that exposes the process by which they were made.
