I have seen many people having tattoos of Chinese characters. The utility, the shape, the history and maybe the mysteriousness of it consist of the beauty of Chinese characters. Kawauchi is also one of people who is mesmerized by it and is trying to spread the words about the beauty to the world. The artist started off from learning calligraphy and had been to China multiple times, where both the calligraphy and the seal carving originated. What is so unique about Kawauchi apart from the rest of calligraphers and seal carvers is that he can sublime everything about the characters by doing body paintings: he successfully blends the history aspects and its modern use. Kawauchi is the beacon of hope for carrying the tradition and creating the new use of Chinese characters.
