Tracy Rocca "New Paintings"

This event has ended.

In this series, Rocca retains her signature soft focus brushwork and branches out to concentrate on a cerebral world. She invites the viewer to pause and meditate on her work. The simplicity of this request is one that is often undermined in our fast paced society, yet the aim of the series is for "the viewer to take a deep breath upon seeing the work."

Rocca thoroughly explores the idea of color as she breaks away from the photographic process upon which her earlier images were based. She remains engaged with the use of both natural light and tools; her primary materials are walnut oil and mongoose brushes. Rocca draws her audience in by blending colors to dissolve the certainty of defined imagery into an undefined ephemeral state.

The series is organic and washed clean of distinct texture, each piece asking for the participation of the viewer's imagination. At the same time the intense saturation of colors chosen for this series provides a refreshing contrast to the yielding focal point: a "white mist" infused in each work that penetrates the vibrant colors of the piece. This "mist" is intended as a passage for the viewers from reality to a meditative space. By engaging the audience to interact, not solely react, the paintings command a solid presence in the room while preserving their quietude. The depth and warmth of her canvases reflect Rocca's progression from white to color as she applies "thin glazes of color" layer by layer, aiming to take us beyond the rush of the day to a "place where the mind can rest."
