numberthirtyfive presents Hidden in Plain Sight, a group exhibition curated by David Andrew Frey of Culturehall, an online resource for contemporary art.

Whether born from forces of nature or the labor and creativity of our ancestors, we are surrounded by ancient systems that have become the framework for our existence. Systems of communication, methods of exchange, time, and procreation, each a truth which seemingly must be obeyed. Hidden in Plain Sight presents a selection of work by New York-based artists Jon Bocksel, Joy Drury Cox, Stephanie Prussin, and Elliott Wright. Through a broad range of mediums and techniques, each explores a foundational super structure of contemporary life.

Jon Bocksel presents a selection of gouache on paper paintings from his series Possibility for a Swear Word. Bocksel sources common characters to create new, iconic forms. The paintings serve as an investigation into language, which invites viewers to consider their interaction with meaning and the written word. Contemplating personal consumption and exchange, Joy Drury Cox created the body
of work titled Subsidy Opportunity. Each collage is composed entirely of price tags, offering a visual record of the artist’s purchases from local grocery stores during the creation of the work. Two new collages from Cox’s most recent series Lost Treasures of Europe will also be on display.

Utilizing analog photographic techniques, Stephanie Prussin experiments with light and duration to visually articulate what the eye is incapable of realizing. Her two recent series Transmission Reception and Transmission Reflection find Prussin’s large format camera trained on the sky or observing sunlight as seen reflecting from a wall in a room. Elliott Wright has been exploring ideas of reproduction, process, and loss. His sculptures and two-dimensional works are rooted in a variety of media and techniques, traditional and digital, which combine to create unlikely and strikingly ephemeral moments.

Artists participating in the exhibition are featured members of Culturehall, an online resource for contemporary art. Additional images and information regarding the artists is available online through their Culturehall portfolios.
