This event has ended.

This winter, Sotheby’s will celebrate the legendary Buhl Collection of photographs in a single- owner sale in New York. The collection explores the theme of the human hand, encompassing works from the art form’s early 19th century pioneers to the masters of 20th century photography and beyond. It was assembled over the course of 20 years by the visionary philanthropist and collector Henry M. Buhl. The collection was the subject of the critically-acclaimed exhibition Speaking With Hands: Photographs from the Buhl Collection at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2004, and has since been featured in many of the world’s most renowned institutions from Moscow to Macau. Prior to the exhibition and auction in New
York, highlights from the collection will be shown in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Zurich, London and Paris to coincide with Paris Photo.

Images of hands, whether depicted literally in the context of portraiture, or more figuratively in terms of gesture or concept, are the leitmotif as we explore the great masters featured in the Buhl Collection.
