Sundaram Tagore Gallery presents the work of American photographer Fredric Roberts in an exhibition of thirty six large-scale color prints, shot both digitally and on film. The exhibition is traveling from the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, where it was shown in August, 2011.

Photographed over a three-year period, Roberts' vibrant images capture everyday life observed during extensive travels throughout remote areas of India. The essence of Roberts' work emanates from the relationships he forms with his subjects, revealing intimate moments including early-morning prayers and ordinary domestic chores. The photographs elegantly illustrate Roberts' mission to explore the spiritual wealth of people whose most valuable assets are their deep connection to faith, family, and long-held cultural mores. Each photograph tells us a compelling story. Many of the images present subjects looking directly at the photographer and at the viewer, effortlessly prompting cross-cultural dialogue.

Fred Roberts has been the recipient of several awards, including most recently, Best Foreign Photographer for India, presented by the Indian government in April, 2011. He also received the International Photography Award in 2003 and 2004. His first book, Humanitas: Volume One, was a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's 2005 Book of the Year Award. In 2007, his second book, Humanitas II: The People of Gujarat, received Honorable Mention in the 2007 Lucie Awards and was featured in the New York Times' 100 Notable Books. For his upcoming book, Humanitas III: The People of Burma, Roberts turns his lens to Myanmar (formerly Burma). The result of eight years of travel throughout the region, the more than one hundred photographs in Humanitas III focus on the spiritually rich lives of the Burmese people. Showing temples, portraits, scenes of everyday life, and landscapes, the book offers a rare view of a country that has been closed to—or avoided by—many photographers due to its social isolation and reputation for political repression.

Roberts' work is in the collections of Yale and Stanford universities; Pitzer College, Los Angeles; the Rubin Museum of Art, New York; and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. He has exhibited at the Museum of History and Art in Ontario, California; the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; and the Rubin Museum of Art, New York; as well as at Lehigh, Yale, and Stony Brook universities.

Fredric Roberts is a graduate of Yale University. In 2000, he retired from a thirty-year career in finance and since then has immersed himself in the practice of photography, traveling throughout Asia documenting the cultures of many spiritual communities. He lives in Los Angeles.
