This event has ended.

Olivier Mosset is one of the affiliates of the BMPT group (the others are Daniel Buren, Michel Parmentier, Niele Toroni) who, in Paris in the 1960s, launched a conceptual challenge to the high regard of content and authorship in painting. They sought to democratize art through the employment of generic composition and gesture.

In a selection of works from the 1980s on view, found abstractions -- monochrome, stripes, a line connecting points, or the stark graphic of enlarged letter forms -- reveal the origin of Mosset’s compositions in observation. Although they invoke Minimalism, these large paintings aspire not to theoretical goals, but to social relevance.

A series of new works demonstrate the extension of Mosset’s ideas to the materiality and production of painting. Here, commercial polyurethane is used to create ten monochrome paintings of identical color and size. A concurrent exhibition of new monochrome paintings by Olivier Mosset will be on view at Leo Koenig, Inc. in Chelsea.
