Shino Soma "Food Show"
SVA Gramercy Gallery
This event has ended.
This food show is featuring wax and ceramics sculptures inspired by food memories, altars, food packaging and food display industry, accompanied by food photography from the artist's personal photo diary.
Born in Japan, Shino Soma was educated and currently lives in the US. Her work reflects a dichotomy of perspectives formed through her cultural and familial experiences, specifically in the post-war Japanese household in which she grew up. Shino holds a BFA in film from New York University and an MS in design from Pratt Institute. She has completed a residency at the Governor's Island New York through Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Lower East Side Printshop and a Swing Space residency at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and her work has been presented at The Armory Show, The Front Room Gallery, Kanuma Municipal Art Museum of Kawakami Sumio, Tochigi, Japan, International Print Center, New York (IPCNY) and School of Visual Arts. Her work is also a part of the permanent collection of the New York Public Library. First growing up in Hokkaido, Japan surrounded by farms and nature, followed by a suburban life in the Bay area and Los Angeles, then by living in the small confined spaces of New York City, as well as traveling in Europe, Asia, Middle East and meeting people from all over the world, Soma has discovered that food really is an international language. She has found that food memories have a long-lasting impact on people's lives and identity.
