Thomas Cordell "Site Specific"
Fischbach Gallery
This event has ended.
Thomas Cordell has produced a wide range of work encompassing exotic and rural settings, suburban vistas and cityscapes. His recent paintings specifically portray regions in Argentina, Brazil, and The United States. In Site Specific, Cordell continues his examination of the man-made in relation to the natural, envisioning urban and suburban architecture as a "natural" extension of the Earth's surface. The clarity and accuracy of Cordell's approach belies his training as an architect, reflecting a skilled and observant eye that pays particular attention to the nuances of topography. His landscapes are typified by an overt confidence in presenting spatial relationships through precise intersecting planes and energetic diagonals, as well as overlapping layers of pure, translucent color. The innate formalism and sleek presentation of Cordell's sprawling urban environments recalls American modernists like Paul Strand, Charles Sheeler and Alfred Stieglitz.
