UNTITLED presents David Adamo's first major solo show in New York.
A performer, a dancer, a cook, David Adamo's art-making has taken many facets. But it is in his treatment of objects that his art has found its most accomplished expression.
Adamo's sculptural body of work to date has tackled everyday objects such as baseball bats, axes and hammers, bows and arrows, which the artists has whittled to fragility and uselessness. Wood that was taken from nature, shaped, treated and transformed into an object to be used as an extension of the human hand, was re-appropriated and made rough again.
With this recent body of work, Adamo's unique artistic practice has gained weight. The sculptures have grown in height and form. The new works have the artist's own body and size as their starting point and they grow in proportion to him - they embark on a new sensation, where the artist is in complete enlightenment and confidence with his own stature.
“The works individually isolated feel larger than me, my family, what I'm used to seeing in relation to myself”. Adamo's first New York exhibition since his relocation to Berlin, shows the signs of a personal diaspora - the memory of home, safety, family is stripped, carved, cut from references known. Within this new-found independence, the artist's body is his new home. The resulting works have been abstracted because of necessity not design; they bear no arbitrary decisions, only shadows of intuition, being present and absolute desperation. He had to leave New York for this.
David Adamo, an artist, public figure and friend who was and is so embedded within the New York fabric has created these works as a memento of the family he left behind and as a homage to the new family he is building.
