Mel Kendrick Exhibition
Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)
This event has ended.
Mary Boone Gallery presents "jacks", an
exhibition of four new large-scale sculptural works by Mel Kendrick.
Made of concrete cast in alternating layers of black and white, each of the works is comprised of two parts: a form of stout intersecting cylinders and a blocky pedestal. The cylinder configurations rest, like a child’s toy jacks, on their points. Kendrick has calibrated the top of the base at eye level, so that the viewer is confronted with a visual plane between what is below and what looms above.
This divide encourages the perception that the animated and freestanding forms on top have been extracted –- an impossibility, given the weight and properties of the material –- from the corresponding voids in their massive foundations. The staccato banding of the concrete suggests an abrupt shift and displacement, while at the same time evoking the epochal ‘laying down’ of geology and the methodical ‘building up’ of architecture.
