This event has ended.

Sikkema Jenkins & Co. presnts a group of new paintings by Matthew Metzger. Metzger uses painting as a conceptual device to inscribe a sense of critical self-reflection within the viewer on the subjects of space, physical potential, and abstraction, all of which fold into an intimate reorientation of ones perspective, or the angle from which we approach anything at a given moment. The artist concentrates heavily on the discourse of abstraction as a subject for his paintings, while exposing its vulnerable yet still fertile position within the domain of art-making at large. He juxtaposes modernist abstraction - and the discourse therein - with the many philosophical questions gestured towards by both minimal and conceptual art forms. This is done so through the depiction of surfaces rather than space, in particular the surfaces of what appear to be banal, discarded, familiar objects who’s initial “use-value” has been culturally retired. These objects are selected according to their ability to complicate their own history of production once rendered as a painting, while simultaneously fitting, with uncanny ease, into the hermetic history of painterly abstraction.

Matthew Metzger earned his MFA at the University of Chicago in 1999. He continues to live and work in Chicago, IL.
