The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture presents a centennial birthday tribute to world acclaimed artist and native son Romare Bearden. This exhibition is the Center’s contribution to the nation-wide birthday celebration of his legacy being coordinated by the Romare Bearden Foundation.
Romare Bearden: The Soul of Blackness is based on the collections of the Schomburg Center and Russell Goings and presents the range and quality of Bearden’s artisitic and aesthetic visions as well as his unique interpretations of the African-American experience. For more than three decades, the Schomburg Center has acquired Bearden’s works, including Bearden’s 50th Anniversary collage tribute to the Center as well as the tapestry Spring Festival. These and selected other works from the Center’s holdings are presented in The Soul of Blackness.
Goings, who had a professional as well as a personal relationship with Bearden, has a deep appreciation of the artist as a friend, an artist, an intellectual, and a human being. Bearden entrusted Goings with artworks as well as sketches, drawings, and illustrations of his thoughts about the nature, origin, influences, and craftsmanship that made him a unique 20th century American and African-American artist. Selective items from Goings’ collection are also featured in The Soul of Blackness.
Through the unique works the Center and Goings have collected and preserved of Bearden's legacy, we are able to discover and appreciate the intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural worlds and passions of Romare Bearden, one of America’s primier visual artists of the 20th century.
