Nicelle Beauchene presents "New Black", the first solo show by Alex Markwith.

Employing non-traditional materials including wood, nails, fabric, leather and cardboard with diverse applications of black paint, Alex Markwith’s assemblages question the tradition of the monochrome as well as our preconceptions of abstract painting. Markwith confronts the binaries of art object and everyday object, yielding diverse handmade, material-based works that echo a range of art historical sources.

In New Black, the artist considers the nuances of his materials with a strong focus on texture and dimensionality. Direct and forceful, the works oscillate between sculpture and painting to offer a physical interplay of surface and structure. These characteristically abrasive and primal constructions are as much personal manifestations as they are formal investigations.

Alex Markwith received his BFA from RISD in 2011 and is currently participating in a residency program with the Edward F. Albee Foundation.
