Gretchen Kraus "Flattening Time"
Giacobetti Paul Gallery
This event has ended.
Time Flattening is part travel log, part constructed memory.
The images are physically found, digitally discovered, and made to challenge the border between real and imagined. What we saw, what we thought we saw, what we read, what we pretended to remember and what we remembered incorrectly. The images are borrowed from The Smithsonian- a Thomas Smillie cyanotype from 1906, football players from a 1957 issue of Time magazine, Frankenstein and Quasimoto toys from the 30’s, perhaps. Reorganized in 2011 on a phone, a digital printer and a photo copier with only the slightest touch of the artists hand evident in their seemless reproduction.
