This event has ended.

"If Paintings Could Sing..." is a solo exhibition by East Harlem based artist Ellen Hackl Fagan.

Through saturation of color, contrast and surface variations, the abstract paintings in "If Paintings Could Sing..."create a chatter throughout the gallery. Like birds on a wire, Fagan's abstract paintings elicit a playful interaction, singing out both to the viewer and to one another.

The paintings depict a visual grammar of colors and forms related to the musical notes sung in the Do Re Mi scale, the ABC Song, or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. In order to select the palette for her paintings, Fagan invites viewers to match colors with each note played in these familiar childhood melodies. The results of these games later get translated into pseudoscientific meditations, and ultimately, paintings, on the blended language of color and sound.

Looking for consistencies in peoples' color/sound grammar choices can demonstrate that there is an innate grammar that we all possess, perhaps used more consistently at an earlier phase of our evolution.
