LUMAS New York presents an exclusive exhibition of the fashion designer Wolfgang Joop. With his filigree lines, exacting texture and powerful colors, Joop is always able to cast a spell on his viewers, to astound and beguile them. Joop’s sketches emanate an uncanny effortlessness. They explain his sense of time, his concept of beauty, with the most minimal and yet self assuredly effective means. For Wolfgang Joop, “art and fashion are most impressive when the objects have an aura of unintentionality; or the intention of being completely self-satisfied.”
The New York exhibition focuses especially on works created between 2000 and 2007. While inspired by fashion, they go far beyond the simple and straightforward design sketch.These are independent works possessing an expressive power on their own. The pieces take some of their inspiration from the nineteenth century; emulating the expression and style of the fairytale-like visual language of pre-Raphaelites such as Edward Burne Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
