This event has ended.

It all started with Malcolm. Seven years ago, Malcolm, and the other 3rd graders living in the Melrose Housing Project of the South Bronx were my first salient introduction to the importance of Social Justice Education. In the Fall of 2009 I was invited to write a variety of curricula addressing privilege for the book Race, Love and Liberation: Till the White Day is Done to be released in March 2010. The book is designed to engage students and educators in the practice of Social Justice Education, while focusing on white privilege. Knowing that this would be a daunting task, I decided to embark on an aesthetic journey to complement my curriculum, and artistically process the complicated content. There is no right or wrong to these paintings -- they are simply trains of thought, each one paired with a lesson I wrote. My only hope for these paintings is that they build awareness of this project, curiosity or just some sense of consciousness. To find out more about them and my process – ask me! My office is on the fifth floor of Gallatin, room 522 or visit www.samanthashapses.com
