This event has ended.

First Street presents "Sunsets/Hillsides", Mari Lyons's fourteenth one-person show at the gallery. These new works follow and relate to her 2008 show of landscapes ("Green Thoughts.") This group of paintings explores a singular motif—the small forest (a hillside) behind her studio in Woodstock, New York, and the effect of sunsets and other phenomena on this small area of land. Events happen: trees fall: they leave a skeleton of branches; the seasons rotate; the light constantly changes; trees become animate; the sky breathes with a mysterious glow; and there is always color. These paintings explore how hard it is to know and to translate anything into painting—even a small hillside.

Mari Lyons's work has received positive reviews in The New Republic, The New York Sun, The New York Times, and elsewhere. Jed Perl has said that she "has staked her claim as the complete painter, the master of every genre." Her work is represented at the Museum of the City of New York, Rider University, and in more than 120 private and corporate collections across the country and abroad. Her work has been reproduced (twice) in Parnassus: Poetry in Review, and she has participated in a two-person show and panel discussion with the painter John Dubrow. Mari is an ambitious and passionate painter who has explored many subjects—including cityscape, still life, figures, portraits, studio interiors, images of fly fishing, and much else. She lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, New York.
