Francie Shaw "Weights and Measures"
A.I.R. Gallery
This event has ended.
This group of ink‐brush drawings, Weights and Measures, uses newspaper photographs as source materials to ask the question, “How can we understand what we see?”
Shaw places the focus on the figures’ postures and expression, but by removing them from their surroundings and setting them against a white background, she leaves the representations of human interaction and emotion ambiguous across cultures and continents. She presents legible cultural signs of both the familiar and the exotic but without the narratives that cue our all‐too‐automated judgments of sameness and difference.
Sidestepping verisimilitude, these works have the immediacy of the hand. The drawings cover a wide range of human experiences ‐‐ handing money to a shopkeeper, taking children’s temperatures, comforting soldiers in wartime. Shaw’s clear pleasure in drawing gives in FrancieGallery.
