Hiro Yokose "New Paintings"

Winston Wachter Fine Art

poster for Hiro Yokose "New Paintings"

This event has ended.

With this new work, Yokose continues to create unapologetically beautiful images of sea and sky, water and light. His paintings are constructed of layer upon layer of beeswax and oil paint on canvas, although in this new work he has chosen to eschew his customary final layer of beeswax. It is a subtle change, but one that allows the viewer to discern more details in these landscapes, as one can now see individual brushstrokes that would normally be subsumed by a final haze of wax. Nevertheless, the paintings maintain an unmistakably lush, romantic character.

Yokose is reticent to ascribe any particular meaning to his paintings, nor does he desire any particular reaction from his viewer. He simply says that the paintings must speak for themselves. They are imagined landscapes, built tree by tree, wave by wave, until they are deemed complete by the artist. Whether they are taken as dreamy escapes from reality, or, true to their romantic roots, something wilder and more melancholy, is entirely up to the viewer.
