This event has ended.

Erma Martin Yost presents hand-felted stitched constructions capturing the world of birds in pictorial and poetic metaphors. With felt as a canvas and thread as a pencil and paintbrush the magical mesh of fibers creates a language of symbolic images and archetypal forms. Photo transfers, found objects and mono-printing further enhance surface details.

Throughout history birds have figured as powerful symbols in the art of every culture, functioning as metaphors of transcendence with the ability to intuit knowledge of distant events. As symbols of freedom with magical power to soar to realms of gods, their keen eyesight attributes them as all-seeing, serving as guides to souls seeking their way to the spirit world. For Yost the intrigue is in the sturdy and enduring behavior of these delicate creatures as they flock together, then pair, engage in combat, hop down a limb backwards, or compulsively create nests with the persistence and perseverance of a seasoned weaver. When observing these details, there is a fusion of Yost’s natural and inner worlds.
