This event has ended.

Five Myles announces a major solo exhibition of new work by Charles Lutz. “Charts, Price Lists, Corrections, and other Relevant Statements” is the most significant and ambitious exhibition of new work by the artist to date. The series is a prelude to the artist’s allegorical based paintings to be shown this November at Gallerie Nordine Zidoun in Luxembourg.

In this most recent series “Charts, Price Lists, Corrections, and other Relevant Statements” Lutz takes a closer look at the monetary figures and rhetoric that have come to characterize the Contemporary Art Auction Market today. Each painting features a carefully selected document from the Contemporary Art auction market, readymade subjects that include quotes, images and price lists disseminated by auction houses in pamphlets and catalogues. The words and figures have been magnified and re-contextualized in a way that makes visual reference to the inflated prices that have been achieved at auction. At the same time they put a critical spotlight on art’s status as a commodity in the financially motivated world of auction houses, the way in which monetary values are determined for works of art, and the relationship between market prices and the larger art historical perception of an artist’s work.

Charles Lutz is a Brooklyn based artist dealing with socio-economic issues, especially the relationship between the Contemporary Art auction market and the larger economy. He received his BFA in Art History and Painting from Pratt Institute in 2004. He most recently showed his work in solo exhibition at 108 Fine Arts, Harrogate, UK, in 2009.

Veronica O’Brien is a freelance curator with a special focus on this critical engagement with the market in contemporary art. After receiving her MA from Christie’s Education-London in the Fine and Decorative Arts in 2007, she moved to New York to act as the Gallery Manager of a New York Antiques Gallery while also pursuing her interest in Contemporary Art through freelance curatorial work.
Lutz’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. He most recently showed his work in solo exhibition at 108 Fine Arts, Harrogate, UK, in 2009
A fully illustrated catalog, with texts by the artist and by the curator Veronica O’Brien will accompany the exhibition.
