Chelsea West Gallery presents “Universe in My Mind”, the solo exhibition by VIO CHOE

“To me, painting begins when subconscious and visual spirit encounters each other. Recognition of something is achieved when visual information is delivered to our brain. But visual capability of human beings often misinterprets the essence of subjects. For example, things that we ‘see’ are in essence, energy and vibration. Quantum physics theory suggests that the visual space and time could be all in the delusion. In the end, we cannot witness the energy and vibration.

Therefore, I mean to express the vibration and energy with every part of my body and move it onto the canvas. Thus I want audiences who ‘see’ my painting to enjoy my work subconsciously rather than just seeing it. This is how my art to be conceived.

If so, what is the essence of this energy? All organic cells receive information from the central nervous system. In case of mammals, this is brain. The brain communicates with the world and universe. In that sense, the universe is all connected in a circle. The connection transcend the time and space. The energy within me could exist in any time. Or it could exist as a part of an organism.

The most important essence of the energy is “love”. The greatest energy is the love of life and it is the reason of our existence. But how is our reality? We are always told to be better than others. Who is smarter, who is richer, who is more beautiful? People apply every possible measurement to categorize and criticize people. The most empowering enlightenment for me was when I realized that none of us can escape from one another. The essence of other people are all connected to me as well.

The universe may seem chaotic but if you observe it from afar, the whole pattern is forming a uniform system. Particles represent the whole. If small particles change, the entire character changes together. That is why small things change the world.”
