First Street Gallery announces the debut exhibition of artist Mark Gotbaum.
Gotbaum's artistic influences range from Renaissance painters to classic comic books. His themes much like his artistic influences are broad from social commentary to the mundane or banal. He is a master technician and proclaims the one constant in his making of art is the love of process: a mark, the touch, the schmere, the drip of paint, all remain active elements of creative play. Gotbaum resists any mechanical or technological aides. The content of the work is as much the way he paints as is the subject matter about which he paints.
One can also see the influences of the "mean" streets of the east Bronx circa 1950's when Gotbaum became cognizant that art had power. While it may have been sports, fighting, and more sports that ultimately gained him acceptance and social entrée, it was art that quietly captivated his heart.
