This event has ended.

Qualia is a term philosophers use to describe the phenomenal qualities we experience when we smell freshly cut grass, see bright crimson or feel the sting of cold in our fingers. There is a qualitative difference between seeing bright crimson rather than a dull brown color.

The mental state of seeing crimson is said to have qualia.

Green, an English artist using the medium of stainless steel, states “For me, the ideas for the sculptures in this exhibition have qualia. Whether it is simply seeing fish refracted through ripples in a stream or the majestic flow and elegance between Botticelli’s Three Graces. Seeing these images gives me an elevated mental experience that I have tried to convey in these sculptures”. Of this work, art critic Ed McCormack of Gallery & Studio says “To most of us, the word ‘steel’ suggests something cold and unyielding. As in the phrase ‘heart of steel,’ it implies the very antithesis of a sympathetic human emotion. Thus many viewers will be totally unprepared for the emotional impact of ‘Waiting for News,’ a piece in stainless steel by Christopher Green, who manages to evoke a visceral sense of empathy in the most enduring of materials and through the most economical of formal means”.
