This event has ended.

Greg Haberny, known for his outlandish in-your-face installations, returns to the Leo Kesting Gallery with his 2009 collection entitled Dirty Little Things. The new collection of paintings, sculpture and a 25 min video details the underworld correspondent to the spoiled myth of the American dream.

Through various mediums including paint, prescription drugs, and subversive pastries, Haberny provides a colorful, cynical perspective on somber issues such as economic bailouts and health care reform. Incorporating cupcakes in his installation, ArtForum notes that Haberny does anything but coat his work in frosting. With the “unavoidable presence of a gyrating go-go girl,” and “a stack of cupcakes frosted with the slogans FUCK YOU and BLOW ME,” Haberny’s work succeeds in retaining a tangibly raw and uninhibited attitude.

The second floor of the gallery is sectioned off with a red velvet curtain behind which the art viewer is confronted with a spacious dark room screening a video of modern day indentured servants. Utilizing cinéma vérité, Haberny conveys the plight of Latin American immigrants living in suburban America. Knowing little English and with no family connections the victims are forced to play out parts in a violent reality. The video plays without amplified sound, only a series of headsets on the wall mandating the viewer to opt into witnessing this everyday gruesome reality.
