This event has ended.

Fahamu Pecou's new works, "Blak Presidential: The Inauguration," look at the cultural obsession with the First Couple from an American cultural viewpoint.

These stunning acrylic canvases dip into modern graphic art and imagery, combining the photogenic appeal of the Obamas with the mass appeal of hip hop, MTV video imagery and the stylings of Rolling Stone magazine.

The Brooklyn-born, Atlanta-based artist investigates stereotypes of black masculinity and notions of fine art, commenting on how the Obamas have redefined and reshaped the image of black Americans. By juxtaposing gestures and imbedded slangisms, Pecou comments on the distortions created by the media and how new stereotypes are being formed based on carefully choreographed images of the Obamas released by the White House.

Pecou's alter-ego character, a 'gangsta-style' rap artist, takes on the role of the Black President and challenges those stereotypes.
