"The Figure and Dr. Freud" Exhibition
Haunch of Venison
This event has ended.
This group exhibition features portraiture and figurative works by 31 artists spanning the last century. This exhibition focuses on the psychological theories developed by Sigmund Freud as a critical lens through which to observe the inner psyches of both artist and subject.
Freud's principles of Psychoanalysis created a language to explore the subconscious mind and sexual desire, which was believed to be the critical part of human motivation. By encouraging self-discovery through the exploration of the psyche, Freud provided us a new model to interpret our perceptions and interactions we have with the world around us.
This rich rubric of interpretation is of paramount importance to The Figure and Dr. Freud, as it allows the observer of these portraits to enter into the psychoanalytic dialogue between the artist and subject, as well as the artist and their own inner mind.
