Judith Murray "Continuum"

poster for Judith Murray "Continuum"

This event has ended.

Pulsing with color and vibrant affect, Murray's recent abstract paintings explore the artist's absorption with the structure of space in Chinese painting, with little or no concern for the more usual linear, single-point perspective characteristic of Western art.

Murray invites the eye to move through the richly developed surfaces of these paintings, inviting the viewer to follow paths of light and pigment, creating pathways that suggest elements of landscapes, streams and the light of changing seasons. A bar of painting that runs along the right margin of each painting imparts an abstract tension to the painting's field, introducing a keen sense of apparent movement found in the asymmetrical. Of the signature technique that imparts a sense of freedom to her work, Murray writes in a catalogue published on the occasion of Continuum: It has been over 30 years since I created a structure that would be present in all of my paintings as an inherent part of the subject…I seek to work within a vocabulary that is specific to my work and ultimately recognizable as my own.
