This event has ended.

Guest curator Bridget Stixrood in collaboration with Anonymous Gallery and Flux Factory, present the exhibition: FALLOW. Artists Mary Mattingly, Brendan Fernandes and Artemis Louis work to examine American culture from the point of our present economic state. With uncertainty looming, the economic down fall has brought us face to face with the loss of identity as a culture. FALLOW explores the possibilities and ingenuity that arise as a result of clearings created from deconstructing established realities. Each artist touches on their own perspectives through time referencing - the past, present and future as a vehicle for investigating our society.

Mary Mattingly, is literally launching her current project the Waterpod™, a floating, sculptural, eco-habitat designed for the rising tides. It will depart in June 13 2009, navigate down the East River, explore the waters of New York Harbor, and dock at several Manhattan piers on the Hudson River before continuing onward. The Waterpod™ demonstrates future pathways for water-based innovations. As a sustainable, navigable living space, the Waterpod™ showcases the critical importance of the environment and art, serving as a model for new living, d.i.y. technology, art, and dialogue. Mattingly investigates ideas of nomadism and the future through architecture, design and digital photography often adding a distinct element of wit and subtleness that make each piece both playful and informative. Brendan Fernandes: A multi media artist established in New York and Canada. Born in Kenya of Indian heritage, Brendan Fernandes immigrated to Canada in the 1990s. He completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007), and earned his MFA (2005) from The University of Western Ontario and his BFA (2002) from York University in Canada. His work is represented by Diaz Contemporary in Toronto, CA. Fernandes’ work explores cultural and personal identity, the concept of “authenticity” and ideas of “home”. In FALLOW, Fernandes looks specifically into our current economic state through the lens of globalization, commodity and how these define or redefine a culture.

Artemis Louis: A highlighted emerging painter in New York. She earned her MFA from Hunter in 2008 and since has been preparing for exhibitions in Germany and New York. Louis’ paintings use history and documentation as a means to explore how we gather and rely upon information. Themes of nostalgia, the past and the phenomenon of belief systems continually arise throughout her work. In a time where we have lost a defining structure that held America together as a place Artemis draws upon this element of placelessness in FALLOW meticulously and artfully deconstructing the established ideas and definitions that assemble our society.
