Debra Ramsay "Balancing Act"

Blank Space

This event has ended.

Debra Ramsay’s work is a visual play on divisions of space within the confines of the painting’s surface. Balancing Act brings together two distinct series of Ramsay’s work, united by the concept—either measured or perceived—of balance.

Measured balance is the starting point for the series Measuring Parallels, where the total surface area of the panel is divided into two equal parts. One half is covered with pigmented wax, the other with an intarsia of eggshell inlay. The arrangement of the sections disguises the actual balance and generates a quiet dynamic equilibrium.

Horizon Line is the second series exhibited. In this series balance is perceived. Ramsay uses a single horizontal line, which traditionally distinguishes earth from sky, to consider the sense of balance felt by being above, at, or below that vantage point.

Inspirations for the works involve a fascination with simplicity; the elegance of an idea reduced to it's fundamental. “Dividing something into two equal parts, finding ways to make that visually interesting, seeking the variety of possibilities in working within that restriction is what's happening in Measuring Parallels and an example of the type of idea the serves as inspiration,” said Ramsay. “Setting up restrictions in the work is actually a way to reveal a lot of possibilities for the artwork, through those restrictions many ideas are generated.”

Debra Ramsay was educated at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn College, and Oregon State University. She currently lives and works in New York City.
