This event has ended.

Marie-Annick Brown is showing two groups of works that are personal reflections on the arts. The first is a series of copies, partial and incomplete, of paintings found mostly in art magazines. It was October 2006, the time just before the congressional elections, expected by many to be fraudulent. Copying as best one can, in a very limited medium, in this case watercolor, deciding that each copy would be “finished” by the end of the day, afforded a chance to keep from going nuts. It was very hard to do, it was very interesting to do, it was full of foreseeable emotions, such as shame at “copying,” guilt at not doing a painting justice, excitement at getting so close to someone’s masterful expression of something not necessarily relatable to. Some paintings were beloved, like Jim Nutt’s, and Susan Rothenberg’s, while others turned out not particularly amiable at close range. There was something vengeful about doing this, because after 2000, it was pretty hard to go about the business of doing art. It had been rather deadening to live out such relentlessly ugly times. It was a way to put a hand to paper and line and color. It was also the best escape while waiting out the elections. At the end of the day, Brown wrote on each copy how it felt to spend that time with it. The next day would be another painter, and another experience. It was addictive and she continued for a short while after the election results.

This time spent with other people’s art may be the reason why she started to reflect on how art came into her own life as a young child growing up in France in the 40's and 50's. This second group of works is a series, also on paper, using watercolor, inks, pencil and sometimes collage, in which she depicts her memories of ingesting visual imagery and notions of esthetics. They have small texts on them. Some of these drawings or watercolors are rather funny, but not intentionally so. Maybe a young person’s solemnity is very funny, that wide-open receptivity. That series is called “Girlhood part 3" as it is the 3rd installment in remembering aspects of childhood.
