This event has ended.

Independent of the New York scene, Hendler began action painting in Paris in 1949, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under the GI Bill. Upon returning from Paris in 1951, he became active in the New York Art Scene, meeting and befriending such important figures as Harold Rosenberg, Philip Guston, and Franz Kline. From 1952-54 in his hometown of Philadelphia, Hendler founded and directed the first ‘avant garde’ Gallery under his own name Hendler Galleries. Among those exhibited were Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Jackson Pollock, Milton Resnick, Ludwig Sander and others well known today. Hendler’s 50’s work is characterized by vivid colors, bold brush strokes, and evocative lines. In 1964, it was described by well-known curator and art historian Georgine Oeri as having a “vitality and freshness, a joyful, even playful exuberance.” Commenting on the automatic, intuitive approach he took towards painting, Hendler himself has described his work as “serious doodling and judicious scribbling.”
