Trestle Gallery (at Brooklyn Art Space)

This event has ended.

The physicality of both artists' paintings combined with the dichotomy of their subject matter, makes this an interesting show that will surely grab the attention of the New York City art scene.

Although their subject matter is different, both artists focus on surface complexity and exaggerated mark making. Duffy chooses to concentrate on figures that are not idealized or romanticized; she finds them more interesting than the stereotype of beauty enforced by the media and society. She affectionately calls attention to her models reality, capturing both their body and a sense of emotion. Lane's intention is not to illustrate ideas or objects; she focuses instead on the physical properties of paint. She says it is the style of painting that drives her, the challenge to make visually interesting paintings that either, succeed or fail depending on how well the paint is placed.
