Collage is like life in its layering of reality and fantasy, trials and successes. After four years of detours, Stacey Clarfield Newman has created a new body of work arising from the hurdles and bumps of life, giving her a new artistic vision. The artist has translated these revelations into powerfully intense imagery in this exhibit of mixed media collages entitled “Naked on the Wall”. Holding nothing back, Newman exposes her all through abstraction and color to motivate the viewer to look beyond the obvious.

June, being the beginning of a new season, is the perfect month for viewing the art of Stacey Clarfield Newman given the artist’s particular style of mixing collage and paint to create a merging of old and new art with fragments from her life. In her artwork, Clarfield Newman has developed a unique method of recycling the ephemeral to create striking hand-painted papers. Using them as painterly “brushstrokes of paper”, she creates lyrical collages containing abstracted “mindscapes” and thought-provoking social commentary. Retrospection takes back its original meaning of looking inward because the nature of her art opens the imagination to unlimited interpretations.

Influenced by music, as well as a love affair with color, life’s events and a deep reverence for nature, her art reflects the artist’s belief that (in her words) “the planet Earth is … an emerald gem to be cared for and appreciated. We must protect and nurture all the living beings who inhabit it.” In keeping with her philosophy and conviction that artists have a responsibility to initiate a dialog with the viewer about critical issues in life, she was commissioned to create a collage mural for the Albert Einstein Medical Outpatient AIDS Wing. Ms. Newman’s collage, “The Sky is the Limit”, was chosen as a visual statement to represent Catalyst, Inc. a nonprofit research and advisory organization whose primary mission is to enable women to achieve their full professional potential.
