This event has ended.

Sara Meltzer Gallery presents Original Drawings for Guide (2002), an exhibition of drawings by Enrique Martínez Celaya. A single artwork consisting of twelve pieces – eleven ink drawings and a handcrafted envelope - the drawings will be shown for the first time in the penthouse-level gallery June 19 – August 1, 2008.

Martínez Celaya created this series of ink drawings while working on the text for the book Guide. Some of the pieces are based on photographs and others on direct observation. The goal in either case was to blur the line between the invented landscape of Guide and the real landscape of California; between fact and fiction.

Accompanying Original Drawings for Guide will be an edition of the book Guide (2002). Part meditation and part fiction, Guide addresses some of Martínez Celaya's thoughts about the meaning and purpose of art and its connection to life and values. The book is structured as a conversation between an old Franciscan, Thomas Hoveling, and the artist as they drive north on the Pacific Coast Highway.
