This exhibit consists of work from three of the modes that Smith is pursuing: very small paintings (part of his Universe series, which now consists of more than 300 pieces), several larger paintings and multi-part works on paper. In these three modes, Smith continues his ongoing exploration of the way a work is made, focusing on the brush stroke or mark as a structural element. He also continues his attempt to differentiate between singularity and multiplicity, simplicity and complexity. The means he has chosen to work with are basic and essential to the nature of painting.
