The National Museum of Catholic Art and History
Museum in The Upper East Side area
The National Museum of Catholic Art and History’s mission is to inform diverse audiences about the aesthetic, devotional, historical, and cultural dimensions of Catholicism and its contribution to the Judeo-Christian tradition in the fields of visual arts, literature, poetry, music, dance, ritual, and film. The Museum also will explore the rich and complex dialogue between Christianity and other religious traditions. In these endeavors the Museum hopes to foster respect and tolerance among all communities of faith and the cultures in which they arise as well as encourage a deepening appreciation of the distinctive expressions they inspire.
The Museum will realize its goals in several ways. The Museum will display religious objects, spanning the fine arts, folk, and craft traditions, from its permanent collection and a series of Museum-designed and traveling exhibitions. The Museum also will collect and preserve significant examples of liturgical objects, vesture, and religious books and documents. In addition, the Museum will support the development and visibility of contemporary artists inspired by sacred themes as well as the burgeoning community of Harlem-based artists working in a variety of fields.
