SVA Theatre
Event Space in The Chelsea 23rd area
Opened in 2009, the SVA Theatre, located in the heart of New York City, dramatically transformed West 23rd Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. It is in every way an offspring of the School of Visual Arts, reflecting the range and high standards of this leading college of art and design. It is a cultural center and a laboratory for the visual arts that serves the diverse and vibrant neighborhoods below 42nd Street.
The theater, redesigned and refurbished by the celebrated designer Milton Glaser and a team of architects and artists, is a world-class facility, specializing in the projected image, as well as seminars, lectures and other presentations. The SVA Theatre hosts numerous events, both private and public. In addition to serving the needs of the College, it is available to the community at large.
Unlike any other New York theater, it features an exterior that is transformed into a showcase for cultural events, works of art and social causes. Under the sheltering marquee (topped with Milton Glaser's kinetic sculpture that comes to life every hour on the hour), the new lobby is stylish, elegant and welcoming. The lobby leads to two large auditoriums, the SILAS and BEATRICE theaters, seating 479 and 266.
