Sandra Gering of Sandra Gering Gallery, New York and Javier López, of Galería Javier López, Madrid became partners in September 2006 founding GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY. In February 2007, GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY moved into its current Fifth Avenue location with an inaugural solo exhibition of light work by Leo Villareal. The gallery is located in the historic Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets in Midtown Manhattan. Joel Sanders Architect of New York designed the new interior space.

Sandra Gering first opened her gallery in May of 1991 on Broome Street in Soho. During these early years, the gallery presented groundbreaking exhibitions by such artists as Janine Antoni, Orlan, William Anastasi, and Dove Bradshaw. After a decade, the gallery moved to a ground floor space in Chelsea on 22nd Street. The program focused on new media artists, placing their usage of cutting-edge technology and materials within a proper historical context. Such artists included John F. Simon Jr., Jane Simpson, Xavier Veilhan, Vincent Szarek, David Tremlett, and Karim Rashid.

In June of 1995, Galería Javier López opened in London with a program that included artists Martin Creed, Thomas Ruff, Simon Martin, and Alix Lambert. In February 1996, the gallery moved to Madrid. Galería Javier López shows mid-career artists working in diverse media including Liam Gillick, Jenny Holzer, Francesco Clemente, Alex Katz, and John F. Simon Jr. The gallery seeks to contribute to the Spanish art community by promoting artists who, while popular in other locations, are lesser known in Madrid. Galería Javier López has developed the presence in Madrid of such artists as Nobuyoshi Araki, John Armleder, Michael Bevilacqua, Andreas Gursky, Peter Halley, and Sarah Morris. In October of 2009, Galería Javier López partnered with Mário Sequeira of Portugal, and in the fall of 2010, they opened a large new space in Madrid hosting a dynamic program of artists including Jason Martin.

Over the past two decades, Sandra Gering and Javier López have exhibited outstanding international artists. The galleries presented the first solo exhibitions of artists such as José Antonio Hernández-Díez, Xavier Veilhan, and Leo Villareal. This new venture supports a core group of mid-career artists while exhibiting emerging artists including Li Hui and Todd James as well as established artists such as Dan Flavin and William Anastasi.
