106 year old organization, the American Society of Contemporary Artists (ASCA), hosts its final exhibition at Ceres Gallery in NYC

The American Society of Contemporary Artists (ASCA) is proud to present its final exhibition, Ciao!, highlighting the work of 5 of its members at Ceres Gallery. Participating artists include María de Echevarría, Erin Karp, Richard Karp, Margo Mead, and Bonnie Rothchild. The 106 year old non-profit organization, one of the oldest in NYC, began in Brooklyn in 1917; throughout the years, its members included renowned artists, such as Jacob Lawrence, Minna Citron, Nancy Sussman Ranson, Chaim Gross, William Zorach, and Adolph Gottlieb. ASCA, as it is informally known, is and always has been an entirely member-run organization with dedicated leadership and proactive members who ensured its long legacy as an important, valuable art organization.

María de Echevarría began painting in 1991. Her preferred medium is oil. Nature is her major source of inspiration, though the human figure presented in nature appears frequently in her recent work. María’s luminous paintings range from semi-abstract to abstract and convey a sense of peace. She has exhibited extensively in NY in solo and group shows. (www.mariadeechevarria.com)

Erin Karp’s photography is a meditation on calm, an expression of her curiosity, and a reflection of her appreciation of details in architecture that often go unnoticed. Her abstract & graphical images, often mistaken for paintings, have been exhibited and collected throughout the USA and have received awards from many curators including those from The Guggenheim Museum. Born in Brooklyn, Richard Karp is an abstract oil painter with a lifetime of experience & exhibition history, including exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where he lived and worked. He was a friend and colleague of Jackson Pollock and Willem deKooning and founded the Second Story Spring Street Society, which later became Viridian Gallery. A master of color, Richard’s work continues to evolve. (www.richardkarp.com)

Margo Mead’s acrylic paintings reflect imaginary landscapes and universes, poised between realism and abstraction. Through her work, she expresses her increasing concern for the Earth and our future, in hopes that we find better ways to address our global climate crisis and protect our planet. Bonnie Rothchild is an award winning sculptor who exhibits her work in the metro area. Her sculpture varies from realistic to abstract with some pieces having a dream-like ethereal quality, while others are expressively life-like.
