This event has ended.

Philadelphia-based artist Austin Martin White presents his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Familiar Dysphoria, opening September 13th at Petzel’s Upper East Side location. Using casta paintings from 18th century Mexico as a template, White disrupts colonial taxonomies of race in his bold, abstracted compositions. Working with a variety of mediums including acrylic, spray-paint, vinyl, 3m reflective fabric and screen mesh mediums, White creates paintings and works on paper that investigate representations of historical memory and identity. In collaboration with Petzel, Derek Eller Gallery will simultaneously show an exhibition of White’s work, titled Lost in the Sauce, opening September 8th at the gallery’s 300 Broome Street location.
