BFA Visual & Critical Studies presents Touch, an exhibition in the Flatiron Project Space by visual and sound artist Connie Beckley.

The installation revisits a fifty-year-old project Beckley began as a young music student. It is based on the idea that sound is felt not only by the ears but by the whole body. Recorded vocal sounds, simple speaker panning techniques, and the interactions of resonant frequencies inside curved glass suggest that individual sounds seem to occupy their own space, yet still intermingle.

The sense of touch has been unusually regulated these last two years, leaving many with a kind of sensory deprivation, and, for this artist, virtual convenience and wireless interaction have lost their allure.

In this work, the visible cables, the glass resonating cavity and the voice are placeholders for a time when touch, emancipated, can fully rejoin its sister senses.
Connie Beckley currently teaches in the BFA Visual & Critical Studies and BFA Fine Arts programs at SVA.
