mh PROJECT nyc presents a new body of sculptural installation “NIGHT DRIFT”, by New York-based Japanese artist Kazue Taguchi.
Kazue Taguchi explores the ethereal and intangible effects of light and reflection. Inspired by stained glass windows in European churches, Taguchi works with reflective materials including glass, mirrors, plastic, and light. Her work explores the various qualities of light, and features a complex interplay of reflections and shadows. The viewers are immersed into a relaxing and sublime space through the movements of light. They are reminded of the profound effects light produces in nature, such as the northern lights, sunlight coming through trees, or the glimmering light reflected off the ocean. In her exhibition at mhPROJECTnyc, she uses mixed media and stained glass techniques to create a light art installation from car headlights and glass.
Taguchi was born in Mito, Japan. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Kunst Palast Museum-Glasmuseum Hentrich, Düsseldorf, and the Alcorcon Glass Museum in Madrid. She has shown her work extensively in cities such as New York, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lausanne, Asunción and Ilhabela Brazil. Additionally, she has completed artist residencies at the Museum of Art and Design, Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Newark Museum, Vermont Studio Center, and Koganecho Bazaar in Yokohama, Japan.
Another component of Taguchi’s work includes performance-based collaborations. She created the stage set for “Centennial celebration for John Cage: Competing time and spaces” at the Kanagawa prefectural gallery in Yokohama, Japan, and “Chaconne” at the Sophiensaele Theater in Berlin, Germany. In the upcoming fall, she will create the light art installation for performance artist Efrain Rozas, titled “A Ocean of Forgiveness”. She received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, BFA from Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo, and has studied at the Barcelona Glass Foundation.
