LAUNCH F18 presents More As You Wish It Were, a group exhibition featuring work by Orlando Estrada, Ian Faden, Eriko Hattori, Kane Huynh, and Assata Mason.

In an interview with Fast Forward: Contemporary Science Fiction, author Octavia Butler was asked to define the mission of Science Fiction writers. Her response? “Behaving as though the world were a little more as you wish it were in some way.” She used this mantra in orchestrating her characters and scenes, creating a new world of her own.

And what exactly does this world look like? Is it one at last void of war, climate crisis, effects of global capitalism, racism, and other means of discrimination? Or are its contents surreal, intended to engage its audience and offer haphazard warning? Within this exhibition, artists have united to demonstrate their shifting realities in a time where fantasy is key, escapism permissible, and reprieve is necessary. The collective aim is to present a more playful and sinister look at the crucial necessity of fiction itself and associated imagery. Through line, color, gesture, and form, viewers are reminded of the power of visual narrative and the importance of reverie.
