Susan Inglett Gallery presents D.I.Y with Jessica Diamond, Sol LeWitt and Lawrence Weiner, an exhibition celebrating the release of the remaining sets of I.C. Edition’s conceptual 1993 project, DO-IT-YOURSELF. From 9 December 2021 through 29 January 2022, a display of the boxed edition will be accompanied by an installation of unique wall works from each of the original participating artists. The LeWitt Estate has proposed the installation of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #1179, “Within two 160-inch (400 cm) circles, draw: Left circle: 10,000 red not straight lines and 10,000 red straight lines; Right circle: 10,0000 blue not straight lines and 10,000 blue straight lines. All lines are randomly spaced and equally distributed.” In the spirit of D.I.Y. and conceptual art, this is a project that invites all comers to assist in its completion. For anyone who has ever said they can’t draw a straight line, and for those who can, now is your moment to shine!

Our “DO-IT-YOURSELF” kit contains all necessary materials, diagrams and instructions for creating your own artwork by JESSICA DIAMOND, SOL LEWITT, and LAWRENCE WEINER. For the run of the exhibition, the Gallery will offer signed limited edition kits starting at $2,500.00 and a limited number of unlimited edition kits starting at $600. With good humor, “DO-IT-YOURSELF” 1993 captures the essence of conceptual art. Each artist has contributed an idea for an artwork, or “the most important aspect of the work,” according to Sol LeWitt. The execution is then left for you to “do-it-yourself”. By selecting conceptual artists from three successive generations, the project emphasizes the diversity and staying power of the conceptual movement.

The elements of “DO-IT-YOURSELF” are housed in a black cloth-covered box, 12” by 10 1/2” by 1”. Jessica Diamond contributes the overhead transparency used to trace her 110” wall work, “Money Dances”. Sol LeWitt contributes paper and personalized pencil for the rendering of one LeWitt drawing. Lawrence Weiner delivers his message with a bright yellow stencil MOI + TOI & NOUS. The label, diagrams, and instruction sheets are printed letterpress on Folio paper by Anne Noonan of Soho Letterpress, NYC. Design by Dan Miller Design, NYC. Published by I.C. JESSICA DIAMOND ( b. 1957) has been the subject of solo exhibitions most recently at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal and the Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham. Diamond’s work was featured in the Aperto section of the 1993 Venice Biennale, and is the recipient of numerous institutional awards, including Anonymous Was a Woman and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.

SOL LEWITT (b. 1928, d. 2007) has been the subject of solo exhibitions most recently at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams; Musee des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Haags Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag; and The Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, among others.

LAWRENCE WEINER (b. 1940) has been the subject of solo exhibitions most recently at the Perez Art Museum, Miami; The Whitney Museum of Art, NYC; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, Scotland; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona; Denver Art Museum, Denver; Musee d’art Contemporain, Bordeaux; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.
