This event has ended.

The Salmagundi Club, Skylight Gallery, presents New York Figurative Show, featuring works from more than seventy member and non-member artists. This exhibition features figurative works of the human form in all its permutations: portraiture, clothed, nude; focusing on the human form and/or face. Presenting an array of works in various media with drawings, paintings, photography, and sculpture, this show explores the range of figurative practice thriving in today’s artists’ studios.

Salmagundi welcomes ARC Living Master Max Ginsburg ( www.maxginsburg.com ) and Hyeseung Song ( www.hmarriage-song.com), who will serve as the Jury of Awards with ARC Living Master Patricia Watwood as guest advisor. ARC Living Master Luis Alvarez Roure is among the exhibiting artists.

Max Ginsburg was born in Paris, France, and received his BFA from Syracuse University and his MFA from City College of New York. Since then, his true-to-life New York City sidewalk scenes have received numerous awards including, Christopher Award, Pauline Law Award, The Edith Lehman Prize, and honorable mentions from both Audubon and Salmagundi.

Hyeseung Song was born in Seoul, South Korea, and studied philosophy at Princeton and Harvard Universities. She left academia to pursue painting at the Water Street Atelier, now the Grand Central Atelier in New York City. After completing her studies in 2008, she was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (again in 2011) and began to exhibit in New York. She is recognized as an American contemporary representational painter best known for her large-scale figurative oil paintings and prints whose visual idioms toggle between resolution and fragmentation. Her work explores themes of creativity, psychological incipience, and the life of the artist.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a panel discussion “A New Generation in Figurative Art” took place on Friday, January 14. The event was moderated by SCNY Vice President Patricia Watwood, with artist juror Hyeseung Song, and artists Richard T. Scott and Brendan Johnston. The discussions were held by artists who are currently exhibiting in the New York Figurative Show, with discussions focusing on the motivations and inspirations for figurative realism to a generation raised on post modernism and MTV.
