This event has ended.

The Salmagundi Club presents the 145th Black & White Exhibition, on view in the Skylight Gallery. This exhibition has a history that dates back to 1878, shortly after the Salmagundi Club was formed, and has occurred each year since. This highly regarded annual tradition provides a unique opportunity to experience art from a vast selection of artists making work today.

This year, the juried show features 66 artworks from 53 artist members, with an incredible range of subject matter and style. As the title indicates, the works submitted must be black-and-white, or monochromatic sepia, from any medium, including drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, and painting.

With such a wide lens, the breadth of work in this exhibition results in a rich tapestry highlighting each artists’ inspirations and approach to art-making in this very moment. Viewers encounter contemporary pieces that depict the subjects and time period around them, such as Anthony Almeida’s photograph, Covid Warriors, 2022, or Carol Peebles’ charcoal drawing, Pandemic Life Studio, 2020, and Aida Garrity’s graphite drawing, New Friends, 2021. While nearby they will observe works that look toward art historical subject matter, as seen in Richard Lithgow’s drawing in pencil, Apostle Paul in Prison, 2022, or Gayle Madeira’s graphite drawing, Midnight Hijinks, 2021, and Jean Marcellino’s charcoal pencil drawing, The Thinker, 2020. An always timeless genre, landscape art, is represented with Sue Barrasi’s impressionistic oil painting, Radiance, 2022, and Joe Goldman’s photograph Windswept-Bailey Island, Maine, 2021.

Throughout the exhibition, the viewer is given a moment to see the world through each artist’s eyes as they observe their surrounding environment, reflect on habitat and companionship, illustrate imagination, and create black-and-white imagery through the genres, techniques, and media of their choosing.
